Wedding in Italy at Lake Braies

Lago di Braies is the most famous lake in the Italian Dolomites. It rightfully ranks among the most beautiful and most visited lakes in both the Alps and all of Italy.

Lago di Braies is famous for its turquoise to emerald-green water, which reflects the majestic peaks of the surrounding mountains. The atmosphere is completed by green pines and larches, which turn the area into a warm-colored wonderland in autumn. The entire lake has a magnetic effect on visitors—everyone dreams of rowing one of the iconic wooden boats and soaking in the beauty of this true gem of the Dolomites.

The lake is located in the Braies Valley at an altitude of 1,496 meters. n. It lies at the northernmost point of the Fanes-Sennes-Braies Nature Park, which borders the Tre Cime National Park. The lake covers an area of 31 hectares (1.2 km in length and 300–400 meters in width), and with a depth of 36 meters, it is the deepest lake in the Dolomites.

The crystal-clear water reflects the northern face of the impressive Croda del Becco peak (2,810 m). Due to its stunning beauty, the lake is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The lake is located in Northern Italy, in South Tyrol. The drive from Prague takes about 7.5 hours (670 km). Although the entire Fanes-Sennes-Braies National Park is closed to regular traffic, you can easily reach the lake via the SS49 state road, turning off at Schmieden-Ferrara. After less than 10 minutes, you’ll be just a few steps away from the lake.

The ideal time to visit is from mid-May to June and from mid-September to October. In early May, the lake is often still frozen, so if you’d like to go boating, plan your visit for the second half of May. In June and early July, the crowds are still manageable. In autumn, the lake is wrapped in warm colors and there are significantly fewer tourists.

If you want to experience a true winter fairytale, visit Lake Braies in the winter. However, in case of bad weather, the trail around the lake may be closed—sometimes even the road leading to the lake can be inaccessible.
