Country information

A wedding on Santorini is popular thanks to the breathtaking natural beauty and the iconic whitewashed buildings with blue domed roofs. The island is known for its stunning sunsets, a favourite backdrop for wedding ceremonies. In addition, Santorini has a rich history and culture, which makes it a unique and unforgettable place for a wedding. On the island you can also choose from a whole range of wedding venues, including churches, chapels, small chapels, gardens and beachside settings, where both small and large weddings can be held.

Santorini can be reached by air; the flight time from Prague is 2 hours 40 minutes. The direct distance Prague – Santorini is 2,150 km. The island has a well-organised bus service connecting all the resorts with the capital.

Summer on Santorini is long, dry and very warm. Rain occurs on Santorini only occasionally, and during the summer period practically not at all. According to the statistics, the rains stop in April and reappear only in October. From May to September it is therefore sunny from morning until evening, with temperatures around 25 degrees at first and later in the summer around 30. Until roughly mid-June everything is completely calm, the sun is warm and the air stirs only lightly, like a gentle breeze. Around the middle of June, however, the Meltemi starts to blow. On the one hand it is windy; on the other, in summer the Meltemi cools the baking air and keeps temperatures at an acceptable level.

Winter on Santorini is generally very mild. Daytime temperatures hover around 10 degrees, but overnight they can fall as low as 0. Unlike the other Greek islands, rain is not frequent on Santorini even in winter. December and January are described as the rainy season here, but despite the occasional shower the sky mostly stays a beautiful blue.

Santorini is not especially green – it is an island of volcanic origin with infertile soil, so almost nothing grows there. The rocky, stony surface is covered with prickly shrubs, and in the inhabited parts the odd tree appears here and there. The hills are bare, without noticeable vegetation. Yet even this is beautiful in its own way – in spring the hills burst with colour, because the prickly shrubs are in full bloom, there is an intoxicating scent in the air and the occasional grass is still green. Over the summer it greys a little, the grass disappears, and so do the flowers and leaves of the shrubs, but the island still keeps its charm. And what it lacks in nature is amply made up for by the astonishing panorama as you arrive by boat – the high cliffs studded with thousands of tiny white houses are world-famous and make Santorini one of the most celebrated and most interesting resorts in the world.
