Wedding in Portugal in the Algarve

Portugal is the westernmost European country. To the west and south its shores are washed by the Atlantic Ocean, and to the east lies its only land neighbour, Spain.

The capital is Lisbon (2.5 million inhabitants); other major cities include the cultural gem of Porto, Coimbra pulsing with student life, and religious Braga. Portugal is a significant exporter of cork, port wine, resin, textiles and sardines.

Portugal is a fascinating country with a varied landscape and a colourful culture that has been shaped since ancient times by the intermingling of different civilisations. Long overlooked in the shadow of neighbouring and popular Spain, Portugal is slowly coming to the attention of Czech travellers too. And anyone who comes here once will almost certainly fall under its spell. A friendly population, a favourable climate, a range of unique and ancient buildings, unspoilt nature and the dynamic Atlantic coast make it inviting to visit all year round.

The distance from the Czech Republic to Portugal is approximately 2,000 km. The journey by car or coach takes roughly 36 hours; the flight is of course much shorter. Transport to the three Portuguese international airports – Lisbon, Porto and Faro – can be arranged on scheduled services or charter flights (ČSA, Smartwings, TAP Portugal).

The Portuguese climate is pleasant, with mild winters and long, hot summers. While the north is wetter and colder, the south is dry and subtropical. On the Atlantic coast the differences in temperature over the year are more even, but there is more rainfall there in winter. The average summer temperature inland is about 5 °C higher than on the coast, where it reaches around 25 °C. In the summer months the highest temperatures in Portugal exceed 30 °C. The ideal time to visit is therefore April-May and September-October.
