Country information

Thanks to its beauty and singularity, the island of Madeira has earned several names, such as the Island of Eternal Spring, the Island of Flowers, or the Green Pearl of the Atlantic. Tourists head for Madeira not only for the beaches and the crystal-clear sea, but also for the varied range of excursions. The mountainous interior offers many hiking trails, which you can choose according to difficulty. If you like an active holiday, set off for Madeira and you will come back with unforgettable experiences.

On Madeira there is unique flora: some 700 species of plants and ferns, various kinds of juniper and laurel. Nowhere else will you see orchids, lilies, magnolias and azaleas flowering in such numbers…… The most striking plant, however, is the dragon tree, or dracaena. Some specimens are up to 2,000 years old. On Madeira, nature surrounds you at literally every step. Tourists are also drawn to the souvenirs – especially wickerwork and handicrafts.

Together with Porto Santo, Madeira is one of the main islands of the Madeira archipelago. It lies 545 km from the coast of Africa and 978 km from Portugal. The area of Madeira is 741 km. Of the 260,000 permanent inhabitants, a full 120,000 live in the island’s capital – FUNCHAL. The favourable climatic conditions are perfect for staying here all year round. The mercury reaches 20 °C in winter, and in summer the average air temperature is around 24 °C. The water temperature ranges from 17 °C in winter to 23 °C in summer. What is more, the coastal waters are continuously warmed by the Gulf Stream.

Madeira can be reached by air; the flight time from Prague is approx. 6 hours 20 minutes on scheduled flights.

Madeira has steady year-round weather of “eternal spring”, and thanks to its special microclimate and the Gulf Stream you can swim in the waters of the Atlantic almost all year round. The ocean temperature ranges from 17 °C in the winter months up to 24 °C in the summer months; the warmest water is in fact in October, when the sea has been warmed not only by the Gulf Stream but also by the summer sun.

Given that Madeira is of volcanic origin and the surrounding waters are several kilometres deep, there are few natural beaches here. Thanks to its natural riches, Madeira is not a conventional beach-and-lounging destination; nevertheless, for those who want to bathe in the sea there are a number of places on Madeira where you can swim in the Atlantic. Access to the sea at the hotels is provided by purpose-built jetties with steps and, not least, by newly built artificial sandy beaches protected by constructed breakwaters.

Vaccination – no vaccination is compulsory.

Time difference: on Madeira you have to put your watch back by 1 hour. Just as in our country, both winter and summer time apply.

Flights, transfers, accommodation, excursions and travel insurance are not part of the wedding package. We will arrange these services for you, tailored to your wishes (departure date, length of stay, departure airport, airline, category and standard of hotel, type of board, transfers, etc.)…
