Capri is the most beautiful and most luxurious island in Italy, with an azure sea. It lies in the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the southern part of the Bay of Naples.
The little island, slightly larger than 10 square kilometres, offers its visitors magnificent scenery, a crystal-clear sea, white cliffs and unforgettable views. The dominant feature of the whole island is the massive Monte Solaro, rising to a height of 589 metres. A cable car runs to the very summit from the hill town of Anacapri. The remains of ancient buildings are also worth attention, among them Villa Jovis, built here by the emperor Tiberius. Certosa di San Giacomo dates from the 14th century. In this former Carthusian monastery you can visit some of its parts and admire the cloister, as well as beautiful paintings and Roman statues recovered from the water.
Among the natural attractions, one cannot leave out the 30-metre-high and 54-metre-deep Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra), whose colouring is caused by sunlight passing through the blue water. It can be entered only from the water, through an opening one metre high.
The main and largest town on the island is Capri, whose centre is formed by the picturesque Piazza Umberto I with the church of Santo Stefano. The island’s second-largest town, Anacapri, is also worth a visit, as is the village around the pebble beach of Marina Piccola.
