Country information

Mauritius is one of the most famous tropical paradises in the Indian Ocean. It was formerly a British colony and is influenced by British and French lifestyles. It is quite common here to enjoy Yorkshire pudding in a French café, overlooking the ocean while listening to Creole music. Mauritius is a volcanic island located at 20° south latitude, about 900 km east of Madagascar and 100 km from Réunion Island. It measures only 58 km from north to south and 47 km from east to west. Almost the entire island is surrounded by a coral reef, which is broken in several places. Famous white sandy beaches stretch along the coast. The southern part of the island rises steeply, the center continues as a plateau, which again slopes down to the turquoise ocean on the northern coast. Visitors mostly come for relaxing on the beaches and excellent swimming, but no one should miss a trip to the multicultural capital city of Port Louis. The capital, Port Louis, on the northeast coast, is a fairly large city where traffic noise and honking dominate during the day, while at night everything calms down except for the Le Caudan Waterfront promenade, where bars, restaurants, cinemas, and a casino are located. One of the most interesting places in Mauritius is the Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam Botanical Garden, founded in the 18th century, featuring enormous water lilies, golden bamboo, and a 200-year-old Buddha tree. Other notable places include Rivière Noire National Park in the southwest of the island, the sacred lake Grand Bassin, the easternmost and rainiest part of the island which is also the largest natural area Plaine Champagne, and Rivière Noire with many beautiful waterfalls.

You can travel to Mauritius by plane; the flight time from Prague is approximately 12 hours.

The average annual temperature is 27°C. The temperature difference between summer and winter, which are reversed on Mauritius due to its location in the southern hemisphere, is very small. The weather in Mauritius is pleasantly warm all year round. Mauritius lies in the tropical climate zone, and its climate is moderated by northeast trade winds, which also bring heavy rainfall and occasional cyclones to the island. In summer, which lasts from November to April, daytime temperatures reach about 31°C and nighttime around 22°C. In winter, these values are about 6°C lower. From January to March, there are about three to four cyclones. The more favorable time to visit the island is during the winter months when air and water temperatures are more comfortable, there is less rain, and overall humidity is lower than in summer months.

For citizens of the Czech Republic and Slovakia, only a passport valid for at least 6 months after the planned departure date from the country is required for entry to Mauritius. No visa is needed.

Vaccinations are not required when traveling to Mauritius for vacation.

The time difference when traveling to Mauritius is +2 hours during summer, +3 hours during winter.
