Thailand, officially known as the Kingdom of Thailand, formerly Siam, covers an area of 513,000 km² and has a population of approximately 60 million people. Thailand is bordered by four countries—Myanmar (formerly Burma) to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Cambodia to the east, and Malaysia to the south. It is surrounded by the waters of the South China Sea and the Andaman Sea.
Most of the population lives in Bangkok and the fertile central plains, which are rich in waterways. The northern regionis mountainous and home to many national parks. The capital city, Bangkok, is rightfully called the “City of Angels.” Other important cities include Chiang Mai, Sukhothai, Ayutthaya, Nakhon Ratchasima (also known as Korat), and others.

A popular destination for tourists is the Golden Triangle, as well as Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai. Southern Thailand—including the islands of Phi Phi, Krabi, Koh Samui, and Koh Lanta—offers stunning locations for beach relaxation.
The original name of the kingdom was Siam, but on May 11, 1949, it was officially renamed Thailand, a name derived from the word for “freedom.” Unlike other Southeast Asian nations, Thailand was never colonized by a European power. Since 1932, it has been a constitutional monarchy.
The country was ruled by King Bhumibol – Rama IX, the world’s longest-reigning monarch, who ruled for over sixty years starting in 1946. He and his wife, Queen Sirikit, were deeply loved and respected by the Thai people.
The dominant religion is Theravāda Buddhism, the oldest school of Buddhism. Other practiced religions include Islam, Hinduism, and animism. Around 90% of the population are Buddhists.
The colors of the Thai flag are red, white, and blue. Red represents the nation, white symbolizes Buddhism, and blue stands for the monarchy.
